Are there differences in the illustrations between plain language (LS) and simple language (ES)?

Yes, there are differences:

  • In plain language (LS), images are an integral part of supporting text comprehension. They help the target group to better grasp the content.
  • The use of images is optional in the simple language (ES). Images can be used, but are not mandatory.
How are matching images assigned to texts in the SUMM AI tool - automatically or manually?

SUMM AI’s AI image function automatically suggests suitable images based on the text content. This is a two-stage process:

  • The tool first checks whether suitable images are already available from existing databases (e.g. from Lebenshilfe Bremen).
  • In addition, the integrated AI function can automatically generate images to match the text content.
  • You can select a different image at any time or have an alternative AI image created via the image description.

Do I need a special license for AI imaging? How many images can I create with it?
  • AI imaging is an additional function in the SUMM AI tool.
  • There is no limit to the number of images. You can regenerate images as often as you like.
  • If you would also like to use the additional function in your tool, simply get in touch with your contact person from our team.

Can I also use my own (non-AI-generated) images?

Yes, this is still possible. In the “AI imaging” function, you can:

  • use your own images from your gallery,
  • or, if required, have AI-generated images created if no suitable image is available.

Should I only use my own images or only AI images - which is better?

Our experience from the target group workshops has shown:

  • The decisive factor is how accurately the content of the image matches the text.
  • The origin of the image plays a subordinate role, the most important thing is that the image shows what the text says.

What about pictures of Lebenshilfe Bremen - do they have to be purchased separately?
  • If you already have a license for Lebenshilfe Bremen images, please let us know – we will activate it in your tool.
  • For new image packages, you can upload the images yourself or let us know so that we can integrate them for you.

Yes, as soon as you select an AI-generated image and insert it into the text:

  • it is automatically saved in your personal gallery,
  • and suggested again for future text projects in the image search – for consistent and efficient work.

Our previous images follow a certain style. How is this regulated for the AI images?

Our AI-generated images follow a consistent style that has been specially developed for the target group. As a result:

  • a mixture of different visual worlds is avoided,
  • the recognition value is retained,
  • and the pleasure of reading is increased by visually appealing content.

The style was developed and tested together with test groups in workshops.

Are the images sorted or described thematically in the tool?

Yes, we are currently working on adding metadata and image descriptions to all images. This means for you:

  • As soon as you start working on a specific topic again, the system recognizes the context
  • and automatically suggests suitable images – you don’t have to search for them yourself.

Who was involved in the target group development workshops?

The AI illustration function was developed together with the Hamburg Senate Chancellery and test groups from the field. The development was supported by the Federal Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs (BMAS). The AI-generated images of people with disabilities were reviewed in the workshops and the feedback was incorporated as a central component of the development. The participants found the AI images to be very appropriate, appealing and versatile in terms of content. In addition, the images were rated as “typical plain language” and helped the test group to identify content in plain language.
